Wind Damage
When verifying a wind claim, it is important to understand which type of wind caused damage.
Wind can cause severe damage to your home and surrounding property. Homeowners should be more aware of how much damage wind can cause.
High winds can take down power lines, rooftops, shingles, etc. Falling branches from trees, along with trees, can cause incredible damage to your home.
Most homeowners’ insurance policies cover wind damage to your roof and home.
Wind damage to a shed, garage or fencing system are also covered, but under additional structure coverage on your policy.
Some of the most common types of wind are:
-
Straight-Line Winds: These winds move horizontally along the ground and can be identified by the way the debris was blown and in the same direction the wind was traveling.
Straight-line winds are created by a large storm system or from a thunderstorm downdraft.
- Tornadic Winds: These winds are very violent rotating columns of air that make contact with the ground. These can be one of the most destructive types of winds you will ever see. Tornadoes throw everything in their path into the air. Debris can get thrown in all directions for miles.
- Hurricane Winds: Hurricanes are very large storms, usually symmetrical in size, with intense winds that surround the entire storm. Hurricane winds can change direction many times during a storm. These winds are usually followed by very heavy rain. It is very difficult to tell if damage during a hurricane was caused by straight-line winds or an actual tornado inside the hurricane.
